Zachary Williams


Last Thursday on Allen Street I saw a small crowd outside the Rockwood Music Hall which hosts a half dozen acts every night, no cover, no minimum. Through the glass streetwall I can see Zachary Williams and his tight band up on stage sounding really good. In two weeks Williams will travel with Ben Folds through the South, and this night he rocked. I recorded my useless attempt to get in.

Chile Cookoff


When Mrs Tourist and I decided to be a tourist somewhere other than New York City, we drove to Old Saybrook, Connecticut and accidentally stumbled into the 2010 Chile-Fest. We got to sample ten of the 31 chiles and I took this photo of our favorite booth and favorite chef who made our most favorite chile. It turned out to be everybody's favorite, too -- he took the top prize. I'll have my audio posted in a day or two.

Winter 2010


Everybody likes to talk about snow and there's another foot-and-a-half falling right now, as I type at 5:45am. But it's not too soon to take a nice photo of New Yorkers who know how to handle it: making a snowman in Battery Park. Behind them is the little Catholic Church at the foot of Manhattan, a shrine to Elizabeth Seton, our American Saint. And who are these artists? I don't know. When I finished the picture they ran off throwing snowballs at each other.

Tony Furtado

Tony Furtado is a guitar, slide guitar, bottleneck slide and banjo fiend. Mostly active in the West, I've been to two of his rare New York shows and pulled him into a tiny room off the main stage of the Living Room for a chat. Jane Lui


Jane Lui is a San Francisco songwriter who is touring the US now, 2008. Nominally opening for songwriter Greg Friedman, their New York shows at the National Underground and Rockwood Music Hall merged into a round robin, and Jane sometimes accompanied Greg directly. I had discovered Jane as one of the gems of the strong San Diego scene and grabbed an interview on her last sweep through NYC, touring as singer for the band Starline Theorie. I like her range. A Nice Bike Ride in New York City


A favorite blogger from "The Blog That Ate Manhattan" just posted pictures from her bicycle day up Manhattan's West Side, at The Blog that Ate Manhattan: NYC West Side Greenway Bike Path. TBTAM really captured the feel of this great New York ride. This is a bike trip my own New York Family Tourist also enjoys several times a year, but we usually drive our four bikes to the Fairway Market at 125th Street and then head south all the way to Battery Park, where we can see our Statue of Liberty. Sometimes we even continue over the Brooklyn Bridge to a delightful ultimate destination, an ice cream cone.

Maria The Korean Bride


A short piece of mine, "Maria The Korean Bride" is part of the permanent collection of WBEZ Chicago: Third Coast Festival in the project 99 Ways To Tell A Story.

Macy's Thanksgiving Parade

its coming

these posts take so much time! I've already clocked 5 hours of editing and have so much further to go. In the meantime, my arrangements are made for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, also known as the macy's parade, and macy's day parade. I begin today with a recording of Clown Camp, the once-a year training in professional clowning for the hundreds of volunteer parade clowns....

In the meantime, here's a link to a new podcast I found by another New Yorker, Jason, who I don't know but I expect I'll meet at the New York Podcasters Association. It's called GOTHAMCAST. Like Tourist In The City, Jason looks for slices of New York's big apple pie in the sky, but, it's a different spice: Tourist use more nutmeg and brown sugar, and I think Gothamcast has extra Cinnamin. For some reason, they're tasty together.

nasty HALLOWEEN in the olde village

In its third decade, the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade is traditionally sexy, grotesque and inventive. Anyone in a costume can march, and many of the creative homemade costumes cost hundreds of dollars and hours and hours of time to construct. In a few days I'll have my recording of the Parade on post.

On December 10 I'll be inagurating a second podcast, SNOWBARK, devoted to invention, creativity and music of emerging artists.

Near the Hudson River I met a man playing chess, and losing, against a fifth grade girl. We were behind a snack bar near a miniature golf course, and the Sultans of Swing struck up the band.

Grandpa's Cadillac

A day for memory:
Here in the city things just blow through for awhile. A few days ago this song appeared on my iPod, apparently brought in by one of the compiling shows that offer an editor's idea of four or five interesting podcasts. This one had no information. Anyone know anything about the writer or performer or name of this song? I call it Cadillac, and I note it references a Michael Murphy song made popular by Hoyt Axton, and it references the first Cadillac by dating the story on the Cadillac's birthday. There are likely other references I don't know -- Ypsilanti, perhaps 113th street.
